Here’s what I’ve been reading and thinking about lately.

Best thing since last time: “Beauty is often treated as an essentially feminine subject, something trivial and frivolous that women are excessively concerned with. Men, meanwhile, are typically seen as having a straightforward and uncomplicated relationship with it: they are drawn to it.” But our best novelists reveal the truth about female beauty, which is much more complicated.

“We are a shouting culture now… Baseball is quiet and slow.” Sure, but that’s why I like baseball.

“Suppost to like violence.” A group of young boys list what they don’t like about being boys.

“The most important thing for aspiring writers is for them to give themselves permission to be brave on the page, to write in the presence of fear, to go to those places that you think you can’t write.”

A thoughtful, powerful and empathetic examination of Daniel Radcliffe, who’s fighting — with much caution and anxiety — to move beyond his Harry Potter years.

Writers’ rooms in photos.

What is authentic in a world of mason jars and twine and canoes and barn hall banquets and that whole faux-folksy cultivated aesthetic?

Living in London is hard.

“The profoundest, truest communication I’ve ever experienced has been with my son, who can’t yet speak.”

A poem.

Some bits from Annie Proulx on living and writing and driving.

Menu marketing ploys.

Nightmare in Maryville. Outstanding enterprise journalism from the KC Star.

Amy Poehler wrote a lovely essay about a summer spent scooping ice cream.

Elizabeth Gilbert is a delight of a person.

Good songs: One, two.

“There is just one main reason why women don’t go into politics.”
